Whether you’re preparing for birth, surgery, or simply supporting someone else through recovery, packing a hospital bag is one of those strangely emotional moments. It’s practical, of course—but also deeply personal. You’re packing for a moment of unknowns, and comfort quickly becomes more than just a nice idea. It becomes essential.
When I started Hank & Hera, I didn’t realise just how many women would tell me they wore our nightgowns after giving birth, during hospital stays, or while waiting quietly in recovery. These stories—your stories—have shaped the way I think about clothing for hospital and healing. It’s not just about what looks nice. It’s about what lets you feel like yourself when everything else feels clinical or out of control.
So here’s what I wish I had known about what to pack—what truly makes a difference.
1. Something Soft, Easy and Dignified to Wear
Hospitals are cold. Gowns are scratchy. Movement can be awkward, and privacy feels non-existent. That’s why I always recommend bringing your own sleepwear or robe—ideally, something natural, breathable, and easy to put on and take off.
At Hank & Hera, we pride ourselves on using only natural fibres—like pure cotton and linen—because they allow the body to breathe, reduce irritation, and feel gentler against the skin during vulnerable moments. When your environment feels sterile, natural fabric offers something grounding, familiar, and warm.
Our Kareena Nightgown is loved for a reason—it’s button-down (ideal for breastfeeding, checks, or IV access), incredibly soft, and offers enough coverage and shape to help you feel put together, even if you don’t feel your best.
If you’re packing for birth or any kind of procedure, we always recommend choosing a darker colour, like navy or black. It’s not the most glamorous tip, but it’s practical. Darker tones offer privacy and peace of mind when bodily fluids are involved.
Other beautiful options:
- Barbara Nightgown – The most classically feminine piece in our collection. Full-length with long sleeves, it’s made from breathable cotton with subtle detailing that exudes quiet elegance. Several women have chosen it for hospital stays, hospice care, and moments when they still wanted to feel beautiful.
- Lauren Nightgown – Lightweight with shoulder straps (ideal if you’re running hot), a button front for breastfeeding, and a softly elevated silhouette. Many women recovering from surgery have told us it helped them feel a little more “human”—and feminine—at a time they needed it most.
- Anne Robe – A robe you can throw on in seconds that still looks like you’ve made an effort. It’s ideal for covering up quickly when visitors or medical staff arrive, or even just when walking to the bathroom. It adds a layer of ease and dignity.
2. What to Arrive and Leave In
You’ll want something non-restrictive, not too tight around the waist or chest. Our Jacqui Set (the cotton top and wide-leg pants with a touch of stretch) is ideal. I often recommend this as a plane outfit too—it moves with you and looks chic, even when you’re not feeling your best.
I personally wore it to the hospital and again home from day surgery—and it gave me a tiny boost when I needed it most.
3. Creature Comforts That Matter
These aren’t about fashion, but they are about feeling okay in the middle of disruption:
- Your own pillowcase (try silk if you can—it’s a small comfort that makes a surprising difference)
- Soft socks or slippers
- A hair tie that doesn’t dig into your head
- Lip balm and a tiny hand cream (hospital air is dry!)
- Your favourite music or guided meditations downloaded ahead of time
4. Toiletries You Actually Want
Pack small, but thoughtfully:
- A gentle cleanser, moisturiser and deodorant
- Toothbrush + travel-size toothpaste
- Dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner
- A small towel or face washer from home for familiarity
- Fragrance-free baby wipes (you will thank me later)
5. Things to Pass the Time
Hospitals often run late. Waiting is part of the game. Having something to focus on that isn’t your phone can make a big difference:
- A light book or Kindle (bonus points: something funny or comforting)
- A journal or notepad (you may find your mind suddenly full of thoughts)
- Pen, charger, headphones
When you’re packing for something uncertain—whether it’s a new baby, a biopsy, or a recovery stay—you deserve to feel calm, dignified, and cared for. That’s what I hope Hank & Hera offers in these moments.
One daughter wrote to us recently to say that her mother wore our Kareena nightgown during her hospice stay. She chose it because it was beautiful—and because it helped her maintain a sense of dignity. That word has stayed with me: dignity. It matters more than we realise, especially in these deeply human, vulnerable moments.
If you’re unsure where to start, the Kareena, Lauren, Barbara, or Jacqui Set, paired with the Anne robe, are always at the top of my list. And I’d be honoured if one of them finds its way into your story too.
